Writing about mothering, friendship, & identity. WORDS WE CANNOT SAY (April ‘22) & VANISHING SHOALS: A MEMOIR (July ‘22).

Kathryn Hahn, Cheryl Strayed, and raw, true storie Kathryn Hahn, Cheryl Strayed, and raw, true stories and advice that holds no punches.

Yes, please.

Tiny Beautiful Things is a collection compiled from an advice column that used to exist on THE RUMPUS. It was a thing Cheryl Strayed did before she published her memoir. Before she was played by Reese Witherspoon in WILD.

I stumbled upon the show on Hulu and then pulled the book off my shelf. I had bought it after I read WILD but never really dug into it. The second advice column letter is about a woman’s miscarriage at 6 months pregnant. My heart tore open reading it. It got me thinking about being a writer, a mother, a human, about taking on the wounds of others. About the task of finding the words to say to someone who has experienced that kind of loss—when there are no words. Because it is so often minimized or widely ignored in our culture and it’s not something that words can heal.

The show is irreverent, like some of the advice. We watch Kathryn Hahn play Sugar and stumble through her own life, asking how she could possibly help anyone with theirs while her own is falling apart. But that fact that her life is falling apart is precisely what qualifies her for the job.

Is TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS on your list? Give it a read. Give it a watch. And let me know what you’re recommending these days.

In honor of National Young Readers Week, I would l In honor of National Young Readers Week, I would like to shout out all the writers and readers of Children's and YA. One series that really stands out to me, probably because my own kids enjoyed them so much: The Hunger Games! Such an amazing opening chapter and I love any book that can hook someone who identifies as a “non-reader,” which I think this series certainly did.

What’s your favorite Children’s or YA book?

Happy NaNoWriMo to all who are participating! NaNo Happy NaNoWriMo to all who are participating! NaNoWriMo – or National Novel Writing Month – challenges you to write a full-length novel in the month of November. That’s 50,000 words or 1,666 words per day. NaNoWriMo is also a non-profit organization and community that helps writers track their writing progress and goals. I participated last year in November 2022, but decided I was too busy to commit this year. Whether you reach your NaNo goals or not, I’m here cheering you on!!

If you’re participating in NaNoWriMo, what’s your WIP? If you’re skipping this year or haven’t participated, what would you write about if you could write (the first draft) of a novel in a month?

November is International Games Month! According t November is International Games Month! According to the American Library Association’s website, “International Games Month is an initiative run by volunteers from around the world to reconnect communities through their libraries around the educational, recreational, and social value of all types of games.”

In case you didn’t know, we’re BIG board game enthusiasts in my family (see photos for a look at our collection). I think it’s great that the ALA has a month dedicated to talking about the creativity of games. In the spirit of gaming, what’s your favorite board or video game?

#QOTD: What are you watching right now? I recently #QOTD: What are you watching right now? I recently added The Changeling, based on a book of the same name by Victor LaValle, to my to-watch list. I had met Victor at the AWP conference in 2017 in DC, and he and I discussed THIS story and its themes, as well as my story and themes. (I was writing Words We Cannot Say at the time). So, it’s really cool to see The Changeling as a TV show now!

#TBT to the Halloween where we went as hippies! Wh #TBT to the Halloween where we went as hippies! What’s been your favorite Halloween costume to date? Are you dressing up this year?
With Halloween right around the corner, I thought With Halloween right around the corner, I thought it’d be fun to think about what the characters of WORDS WE CANNOT SAY would be for Halloween.

As a toddler mom and business owner, Lotus would definitely make a home-made costume to match her kids. Lotus’s cousin, Penelope, would probably choose to be something ironic that is *barely* a costume just to say she did Halloween. And her best friend? Nia might just throw on her hubby’s coat and stethoscope to go as a doctor, but reminisce about the “sexy” costumes she used to put a lot of effort into when she was younger.

What’s your costume plan/inspo? Do you plan ahead by weeks or months or leave your costume to the last minute? I’d love to hear and see pictures in the comments!
